The Basics / Reciprocity

Reciprocity

Got a little motto
Always sees me through
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you.

Hey you. Yes, you. I know you are reading this and going "what is she on about this time, eh?" I know, new graphics board and all. So much to read. So many rules. There are plenty of graphics boards out there who want you to make a set amount of posts before you can access everything, and you have to jump through hoops to get to the good stuff. Well, that is not the case here.

But I wanted to talk to you about reciprocity. You see, reciprocity is what makes or breaks online communities. It builds trust, it reduces toxicity and it builds community. Things that we want to see in an online forum. You know, an environment where we feel comfortable sharing things and engaging with others.

Yes, I know. It means that you have to make posts. Gasp. You have to share content. You may have to make more than the minimal effort - that is, grab stuff, or just hang out in the shadows. Fine. If that is your comfort zone, then feel free to do that. I am not going to lock anything behind a post amount.

But I am going to poke at that lil part of you, you know. That lil part that may or may not be your conscience. And I am going to say... hey, would it be so bad to make an effort? Would it be so bad to hang out with nice people, and share some stuff with them? Offer some support, and maintain that precious balance between giving and taking. Because, hand on your heart - are you keeping that balance? Are you a giver or a taker?

So hey. No biggie. You may want to lurk, and that is fine. Grab the stuff you want. But you know, it is more fun to participate and do things - so why not join us? Why not share a little?

So what's the one conclusion
I can bring this number to?
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you!

The Basics / Design Etiquette

Design Etiquette

I am certain that some people will have a very long version of this. But in short, my rules for design etiquette boils down to: Don't be a dick. It should be nice and simple enough, but well, sometimes we do need to clarify, so I will expand upon it.

Do not claim someone else's work as your own.
This is a pretty simple one. Do not claim to be the maker of avatars, resources and work that is not yours. If you were inspired by someone else, say so.

If you gave it away, it is gone.
Another pretty simple one. Don't recycle avatars that were given away.

Credit where credit is due.
Always, always credit. Be it the artist of the avatar you are wearing, the creator of the resources you are using, or the inspiration for your artwork.

Ask permission. Or ask questions.
If you do not know something, try asking the original artist. Can I use this resource, can I use your work for inspiration, how did you achieve this effect?
